AI Visibility Index
Every month we ask AI answer engines the questions real buyers ask, then record which brands they cite. The full question set, the engines used, and the thresholds are published, and every edition says how much its answers moved between identical asks.
The main finding so far
AI answers rarely link to the brand's own website
When an AI answer cites a source, we can check whether the link points at a tracked brand's own domain. Across 1,741 citation links in 191 measured answers, only 17.9% went to a tracked brand's own domain. The rest went to other sites — retailers, publishers, review sites, forums and other brands.
So a brand can be named as the best choice in an answer while the link points elsewhere. Being named and having your own site cited are different things, and this figure measures only the second.

Answers measured
Separately, 8 questions are repeats, asked twice to measure how much the answers move. They are excluded from every brand's share, so the figures below cover the 100 distinct questions only.
Each question is put to every engine separately, so 100 questions across 2 engines is 200 attempted answers. Of those, 191 came back usable and are what each brand's share is measured against; the rest failed or returned no AI answer and are excluded rather than counted as a brand not being cited.
What this means if it is your brand
Two useful things follow from the numbers above, and Robot Visible was built around both.
Your own site
It is the part you control
Roughly one citation in five points at a brand's own pages. To win those, an engine has to be able to reach your page, read it, and find a clear answer on it. Robot Visible scans exactly that: what crawlers can access, what they can understand, and which pages fall short.
The questions you are missing
Not every question is worth chasing
In these editions most brands are cited for a handful of questions and absent from the rest. Robot Visible tracks the buyer questions that matter to your business, shows which competitors are cited where you are not, and ranks the changes most likely to close that gap.
Then it checks whether the change worked
On the Fix & Prove plan, supported changes are prepared as a reviewable GitHub pull request or an approved Shopify update, and the same questions are re-checked after publishing so you can see what moved. No tool can guarantee a citation, and any that claims to is selling something it does not control. What you can have is evidence of what changed and what happened next.
How each edition is produced
- Questions come first, brands never appear in them
- Each category uses around fifty non-branded buyer questions covering discovery, comparison, use-case and problem intents. Naming a brand in a question would prompt its own answer.
- Every brand domain is verified before a run
- Saying a brand was not cited is a claim about a real company. Domains are checked against the company's own site first, because attributing the wrong domain would make that claim false.
- Bands, not a numbered ranking
- Fifty questions cannot support ordinal precision. Brands are grouped by how often they were cited, and adjacent brands are not presented as beating one another.
- Each edition publishes its own error bar
- Several questions are asked twice in the same run and the difference is published. Stability varies by category: a consolidated market barely moves, a fragmented one churns at the margins.
- Inputs are frozen when a run starts
- Questions, brands, thresholds and engines are snapshotted, so editing a category later can never move a past month's figures.
Our wider rules for publishing figures about other companies, and a dated log of every correction we have made, are on the methodology and corrections page.
What this is not
A citation is not an endorsement, and being cited is not the same as being recommended. These editions measure which sources AI answers credit for a set of questions in one market in one month. They do not measure a brand's overall visibility, quality or popularity, and no brand can pay to be included, excluded or moved.
