AEO vs GEO vs AI visibility
A precise guide to AEO, GEO, LLMO, AI SEO, and AI visibility: which are synonyms, which describe outcomes, and why the distinction matters.
Quick answers
Is AEO the same as GEO?
For practical purposes, yes. GEO stands for generative engine optimisation and names the same practice as AEO. LLMO and AI SEO are further synonyms. None of them describes different work; the field has simply not settled on one word.
Is AI visibility a synonym for AEO?
No. AEO is the practice; AI visibility is the outcome it is measured by. A tool can report your AI visibility without doing any AEO, which is exactly the distinction to check when comparing vendors.
Which term should I use internally?
Use AEO for the work, AI visibility for the measurement, and the specific states — mentioned, recommended, cited, absent — for individual results. Keeping the three layers separate is what stops a team reporting a number that nobody can act on.
The short answer
AEO, GEO, LLMO and AI SEO all name the same practice: getting a business named in AI-generated answers. AI visibility is not a synonym for any of them. It is the outcome that practice is measured by. AI search is the channel where the outcome happens.1,2,3,4
Put plainly: you do AEO, in AI search, and you measure AI visibility. A vendor using GEO instead of AEO is almost certainly describing the same work. A vendor using AI visibility as though it were the practice is being imprecise, and it is worth asking what they actually measure.
The mapping
| Layer | Terms in use | Test |
|---|---|---|
| The practice | AEO, GEO, LLMO, AI SEO | Can you put “we do” in front of it? |
| The outcome | AI visibility, share of AI voice, citation rate | Can you put a number on it? |
| The channel | AI search, answer engines, AI assistants | Is it a place an answer appeared? |
| The states | Mentioned, recommended, cited, absent | Is it what one answer did? |
AEO, GEO and AI visibility describe different layers›
Why the industry settled on different words
The vocabulary is still moving. HubSpot ships a product it calls AEO. Ahrefs uses AI visibility for the outcome and names AEO as the practice underneath it. Semrush leads with an AI Visibility Toolkit. Google acknowledges AEO and GEO as terms in common use while pointing out that established search fundamentals still apply.
All four are describing the same territory. The disagreement is about naming, not substance, which is why a buyer comparing tools should map claims to the layers above rather than to the label on the box.
The distinction that actually matters
Practice and outcome get conflated most often, and it costs money. A tool that measures AI visibility tells you where you stand. It does not, by itself, do AEO. The work of choosing a change, making it, and confirming whether the answer moved is a separate thing, and it is the part that changes the number.
The other distinction worth holding is between the states an answer can leave you in. Being mentioned, being recommended, and being cited are three different outcomes with three different follow-on actions, and a single blended score hides which one you are missing.
How to read a vendor claim
- “We track your AI visibility” means measurement. Ask which providers, which API surfaces, how often, and what happens to a provider that fails.
- “We improve your AEO” means work is being done. Ask what evidence selects the work, and what proves it landed.
- “We guarantee citations” means the claim is unsupportable. There is no submission mechanism and no provider offers inclusion.
- “Share of voice” needs a denominator. Ask whether it counts distinct answers or per-competitor placements, because those give very different numbers.
The one-line version
AEO is what you do. AI search is where it lands. AI visibility is how you know whether it worked.

- Introducing HubSpot AEO — HubSpot. Ships AEO as a named product category covering visibility, competitor share of voice, and citation analysis, evidencing the term's consolidation.
- AI Visibility Checker — Ahrefs. Uses AI visibility for the measured outcome and identifies answer engine optimisation as the underlying practice, which is the split this guide describes.
- AI Visibility features — Semrush. Leads with AI visibility as the toolkit name, showing the outcome term being used where other vendors use the practice term.
- A new resource for optimizing for AI features — Google Search Central. Acknowledges AEO and GEO as terms in common use while stating that established search fundamentals still apply rather than being replaced.
